14 January 2008 - Budding artists, film makers and sportspersons in Greater London will be showing off their work at a special awards ceremony in Barking on Wednesday.

England Basketball Regional Development Manager Steve Alexander and filmmaker Luana Di Pasquale (recognised on the Channel 4 talent website) will be handing out certificates of achievements to year five and six school pupils in the presence of proud parents and local education officials. And one lucky child will have the chance to spend a full day with Luana to produce their own documentary.

Barking and Dagenham children have been attending after school Morphing Clubs over the last eight months. The children develop life-long skills that build confidence and self-esteem by taking part in arts, video and sports. The clubs aim for an improvement in both school attendance and educational performance. The Morphing Club is organised and run by LifeLine (www.lifelinecommunityprojects.org), which provides services to empower local communities to build strong foundations for their future.

Nathan Singleton, Director of Families & Young People at LifeLine, says: “The children attending the Morphing Clubs over the last year or so have all put in a tremendous effort to produce some amazing work, which will all be on display at the awards presentation. Not only have they been able to try something new, fun and exciting but they have also learned a great deal, which will help them in their school and every day lives. Personally, I have seen some of the children grow in stature and confidence and this will help them become positive and active citizens in the local community.

“It is also testament to the LifeLine Morphing project, which deals with young people at transitional stages in their lives, and the efforts of all the children involved that the awards ceremony has attracted such high profile names."

The Morphing Project is funded by Barking and Dagenham Children’s Fund and East Foundation, which is part of East Thames Housing Association.
