Did social media win the US election?

global tolerance news: 08 November 2012

President Obama was re-elected for a second term as US President and announced it with the most retweeted tweet of all time: Four More Years.

Powered by social media, Americans have not only engaged with their presidential candidates, but also supported the appointment of the first openly gay US senator, the legalisation of same-sex marriage in three states, and a Senate that will include the most women in US history.

At global tolerance, we embrace the power of social media for social good, and have worked with:

  • UNESCO for a special report on the most innovative uses of ICTs and social media towards peace, tolerance and understanding around the world
  • Georgetown University’s Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs to use digital communications strategically to feel the pulse of America’s youth on values, religion and politics
  • campaigner John Bunzl to become a regular blogger for the Huffington Post in time for the election
